Camp Achor 2009, July 12-17

 About Camp Achor Minimize

Camp Achor is an old-fashioned Baptist camp meeting.  It is hosted by South Side Baptist Tabernacle in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  Camp Achor is held in a giant tent on the church property at 6710 Textile Road each year beginning the second Sunday in July.

South Side Baptist Tabernacle considers it a privilege to sponsor Camp Achor.  Our desire is to meet with God in Spirit-filled services. We come to preach, pray, sing and shout.

The preachers who preach are requested not to bring the issues and problems of their communities and make them ours. Camp meeting is not a time to tear down, but to build up. It is not a time to skin the sheep nor to take issue with personalities.

A camp meeting is a time to brag on the Savior, praise our Captain, shout His victories, and worship our Lord. Preachers are to preach from their overflow those precious things that have become living realities to them; things that have blessed them, strengthened them, and refreshed them; things God has made alive in them that have revealed Christ to them and will reveal Christ to us.

The camp meeting is a time for the soldiers of the cross who have been in the trenches to withdraw behind the front lines for a time of refreshing. The soldiers have been fighting the enemy, standing guard, dodging bullets, and tending the wounded. The camp meeting is not a withdrawal to have a strategy or briefing session. Other kinds of meetings are for that purpose. The camp meeting is a time when the Captain and His soldiers fellowship over delicious food and delightful drinks. The soldiers sing praises because of glorious victories. They brag on their ever-present Captain who has led them from victory to victory in spite of all the enemy has done. The Captain has guided them day and night. He has watched over them in His wisdom. He has provided for their needs. Oh, what a captain!

There are some things about Camp Achor that will be helpful in understanding it, since the camp meeting is owned, operated and sponsored by South Side Baptist Tabernacle, it is Baptist in its doctrine. Other denominations are welcome, but Baptist doctrine will be preached and practiced on these camp grounds. If members of other denominations come they will not be attacked for their beliefs, and neither will there be any direct attempt to change them. We would expect the same kind consideration by those who attend from other faiths. Since it is a Baptist camp meeting, a person would expect to hear what we as Baptists believe. The same would be true if we went to a camp meeting of another denomination. We would expect them to preach and practice their beliefs without inhibition.

Because of our praises, joy and rejoicing, we may be branded many things which we are not (Charismatic, for example). Care should be taken not to judge Camp Achor by what some say about it or by certain individuals you may see here. Check with the personnel who make up the South Side Baptist Tabernacle before you brand Camp Achor one thing or another.

Our services are subject to change depending upon the leading of the Holy Spirit. For a schedule of how the days are at Camp Achor, click here.
